Tour de Cure 2009

The boys and I spent the weekend in Brigham City riding in the Tour de Cure, a bike ride to raise money for Diabetes. Carter rode 10 Miles and I rode 25! I know every year I am determined to ride more, but slack off in the training! Maybe next year!

We are so greatful that Carter was able to ride in the ride this year, especially after our scare last Sunday! When Carter woke up his blood sugar was low. Not too low, but low. He sat at the kitchen table to eat his breakfast and after a couple of bites He got up, went to the bathroom, came back and as I walked around the corner he fell off his chair and started to Seize. I called 911 and they got the paramedics here to work on Carter. He continued to sieze for a few minutes. They were unable to get an IV in him so they drilled right under his knee cap into his bone marrow to inject the glucose to get his blood sugar up. His vitals were a little scary so they had life flight on stand by, but after a minute or so the glucose kicked in he stopped seizing, and his breathing started to slow down and his heart started to slow down. He was still unconcious, but was trasported by ambulence to Primary Childrens. They were finally able to get an IV in on the ride to the hospital and were able to take the huge needle, (I'm sure there's a word for it) out of his leg. Carter started to come around in the ambulence but was still very confused and couldn't answer any questions, but stable. After about an hour or so in the hospital he was able to answer us and started to come to. By the 2nd hour he was ready to come home and very impatient with the nurses and doctors that kept coming in and poking and prodding him!! He told me "I don't like that Dr!!" right in front of the Dr. after she checked him. Gotta love kids honesty! After 5 hours in the hospital they let us bring him home! Carter has had Diabetes for almost 4 years now and we are constantly reminded of how precious their little lives are. He is such a strong kid!

The Tour de Cure raised over $400,000.00 this year for Diabetes! Our little family/friends; Cash for the Cure, team raised $16,000.00 alone!!
